OBTAINING REPTILES AND FROGS.
To obtain a given reptile/frog one may either obtain it from a captive source such as a dealer or keeper, or catch it oneself. Currently in Australia there are few reptile keepers, fewer breeders, and virtually no dealers of any form. This means that in order to obtain reptiles and frogs most people will have to obtain them themselves, by capturing them in the wild state.
To obtain a given species the easiest way is to find out about its' habits, distribution, etc, and then act accordingly. Anyone within Australia can (legally) obtain any reptile species found within Australia within 12 months if they apply themselves to the task, and have justification in doing so.
When collecting reptiles and frogs from the wild it is important to keep detailed records of what is found. This includes the following information:
1/ Date,
2/ Time of day,
3/ Map location,
4/ Numbers and species caught,
5/ Weather conditions,
6/ Where specimens were found,
7/ Collectors' name/s,
8/ Other relevant information.
Very importantly, when collecting, the following points should be remembered:
1/ Minimize environmental impact or destruction. In other words replace rocks, logs, etc. as found where possible. Don't move anything that doesn't need moving.
2/ Never collect more specimens than required.
3/ Have adequate means to transport captured specimens.
